Abstract
This study firstly aims to examine Quintilian’s theory of the ‘decline of eloquence’ and his theory of an ‘ideal orator’. Chapter 1 surveys Quintilian’s life from birth to death in relation to the social environment he lived in. Chapter 2 covers Quintilian and the prevailing discourse on the early Roman Empire, ‘Discourse on Oratory Corruption’. Lastly, Chapter 3 examines characteristics of ideal orators suggested in Institutio Ooratorio and their limitations. Eloquence, introduced to Rome from Greece, became a prime virtue of the political elite in the Roman Republic. According to the political transition from Republic to Empire, restrictions on political liberty resulted in the corruption of eloquence. Quintilian criticized this corrupted eloquence in his thesis De Causis Corruptae Eloquentiae and attempted to elevate the status of rhetoric, suggesting aspects of an ‘ideal orator’ in Institutio Oratorio. For this reason, Quintilian highlighted morality as a crucial virtue of Vir Bonus, that is ‘ideal orator’. Yet, the ideal aspects he suggested were quite distant from reality. Quintilian’s ‘ideal orators’ were dressed in republican fashion and this did not fit into imperial Rome. On that account, the noble ideal in Institutio Oratorio was disconnected from reality and thus failed to convince the public.
