Abstract

The aim of this study is to offer forensic data for estimating the PMI(post mortem interval), such as differences in the entomofauna and the carrion decomposition rate in the naked and wrapped pig carrions, and to investigate the factors affecting these forensic data. Two pig carrions, naked and wrapped, were placed each in summer and fall, 2011 on a small mountain in Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do province. Diptera and Coleoptera occupied about 98% of the insects collected (a total of 371 individuals of 4 orders), and the insect of Calliphoridae (Diptera) was the first visitor in all the carrions. These two dominant insect orders showed up for the similar period of time in both the naked and wrapped carrions during the summer. On the other hand, they appeared shorter in the period in the wrapped carrion than in the naked one during the fall. Further fewer numbers of insects were collected in the wrapped carrions than in the naked ones in both seasons. These facts suggest that wrapping was an important factor to interrupt inducing insects into carrions. As regards the decomposition rate of the carrions, it was directly affected by the ambient temperature in the naked carrions, but was affected by the wrapping effects such as retention of rainwater or thermal insulation in the wrapped carrions. Accordingly it was suggested that the environmental conditions like season and rainfall and the exposed extent of carrions must be taken into consideration to estimate the PMI.
