Abstract
The aim of the study was to offer the forensic and entomological evidence for estimating the postmortem interval(PMI) of the severed carrions under the various packaging conditions. The decomposition stages (I-V) and the arthropod succession in 3 pig forelimbs packed each in a plastic bag or in a resin bag or buried under the ground were observed during 60days at the Mt. Hwangryung, Busan in the fall 2012 and the spring and summer 2013, respectively. As the results, it was found that the decomposition rate was largely affected by climatic conditions and characteristics of packaging materials. That is, the decomposition rates of pig legs in the plastic bag were faster than in the resin bag during both the spring and summer 2013, suggesting that the rate was affected by the packaging materials. Further, it was indicated that the decomposition rates of pig legs in the plastic bag is closely related to the ambient temperature judging from the fact that the rate was rapid in the order of ambient temperature, i.e. summer, spring and fall. As for the rate of pig legs in the resin bag, it was faster in the spring than in the summer. The higher rate in the spring might be due to the earlier visit of insects by the larger degree of damage in the spring. The rate was slowest in the buried pig legs in all seasons owing to comparatively low temperature and the barrier of the ground blocking approach of insects. A total of 628 specimens of 25 species of 13 families belonging to 4 orders were collected. The first-arriving insects belong to the Calliphoridae in all the carrions, indicating that the insects of the family are an useful indicator for the PMI. Calliphora vicina of this family was found another useful index indicating the victimized season of the abandoned carrion, judging from the fact that it was found mainly in the summer. The above forensic and entomological information would be valuable reference data for estimating the PMI of severed human cadavers packed or buried in the investigation of death case.
