피터즈와 허스트의 ‘지식의 형식으로의 입문’으로서의 교육은 대표적 자유교육론으로 간주되어 왔다. 최근에 허스트는 전기 자유교육론의 한계를 비판하고 ‘사회적 실제로의 입문’으로서의 교육을, 화이트는 개인의 욕구를 만족시키는 가치있는 활동으로서의 교육을 자유교육의 대안으로서 제시한다. 그러나 ‘지식의 형식에의 입문’으로 대표되는 자유교육뿐만 아니라 그것에 대한 허스트와 화이트의 대안적 논의는 공통적으로 ‘실재’에 대한 심각한 논의를 결여하고 있다. 본 논문은 현대 자유교육론이 배제한 실재의 의미와 그것을 토대로 실현되는 자유교육의 참된 의미를 토미스트인 자끄 마리땡의 철학적-종교적 관점에 비추어 드러낸다. 마리땡의 존재론적 관점으로부터 드러나는 인격과 개체성, 인식론적 관점으로부터 드러나는 통찰이나 직관의 근원으로서의 전의식과 정의적 공통 본성 등의 개념은 현대 자유교육론이 배제한 실재의 의미와 자유교육의 참된 의미를 조명해 준다. 또한 철학적-종교적 자유교육론은 실재하는 인간 존재자의 신성한 측면을 분명하게 드러냄으로써 인간의 형이상학적이고 종교적 측면을 무시하고 있는 포스트모던 교육 사태에 올바른 인간상이 무엇이 되어야 하는가에 대해 성찰하도록 해준다.
Abstract
Since 1960s, Peters and Hirst’s ‘education as initiation into the forms of knowledge’ has been regarded as the standard of liberal education. Recently, Hirst criticizes his previous theory of liberal education and suggests an alternative view of education, i.e., ‘education as initiation into the social practices.’ White also proposes an alternative theory of education which emphasizes the satisfaction of personal informed desires through their whole lives. However, not only ‘education as initiation into the forms knowledge’ but also Hirst and White’s alternatives of liberal education do not make their discussions in the way that they rightly consider the concept of ‘reality’. This study shows the meaning of ‘reality’, which the modern ideals of liberal education excluded, and the authentic meaning of the liberal education on the basis of the Jacques Maritain’s philosophical-religious view. The meaning of reality about liberal education will be revealed from the perspective of Maritain’s ontological and epistemological standpoints. The concepts of personality and individuality on a being and preconciousness and affective connaturality which are the roots of intuition or insight and intelligence and will, shed light on the real meaning of realty. Maritain’s philosophical-religious view on education is a proper alternative of liberal education and illuminates the sacred aspect of a human being. Also it makes us to reflect on what must be a desirable human person in the present education which is occupied with the ideas of post-modernism.
