존 화이트의 교육평가관에 대한 타당성 고찰: 교육목적과 학습의 측면에서

교육평가가 교육목적 실현에 기여해야 함은 매우 당연하다. 그러나 현행 교육평가가 교육목적 실현에 얼마나기여하고 있는가에 대해서는 의문이 든다. 화이트(White, J.)는 ‘잘삶’이라는 교육의 목적에 근거하여 시험 체제에이끌리는 영국의 평가 체제에 대해 강하게 비판하며, ‘프로필’을 그 대안으로서 제시한다. ‘대학입시’와 ‘시험’이라는 공통 요소를 통해 볼 때, 화이트의 교육평가관은 우리 교육과도 의미 있는 관련을 맺을 수 있다. 본고는 화이트의 교육평가관을 우리 교육의 맥락에서 본격적으로 논의하기 전에 진행되는 예비적 연구의 성격을 지닌다. 연구자는 화이트의 교육평가관을 교육목적과 학습의 측면에서 그 타당성을 논의한다. ‘체험주의’(experientialism)는교육목적의 측면에서 잘삶의 타당성을 입증하는 근거 이론으로서 적용되었고, 학습에 대한 함린(Hamlyn, D. W.) 의 철학적 분석은 평가 방법인 프로필의 타당성을 논의하는 배경이 되었다. 논의의 결과 화이트의 교육평가관은우리 교육에 적용이 가능한 건전한 이론으로 판단되었으며, ‘목적 기반 교육평가’에 관한 보다 구체적인 논의의필요성이 제안되었다.
Abstract
The evaluation of education should contribute to the realization of the aims of education. However, it is doubtful how much the current educational evaluation contributes to the task. Based on the aims of education as ‘Well-being’, John White strongly criticizes the UK 's evaluation system and proposes ‘profile’ as an alternative. In respect of the common elements of ‘university entrance’ and ‘examination system’, White's theory of educational evaluation can be meaningfully related to our educational system. This paper is a preliminary study conducted before discussing the White’s theory in earnest in the context of our educational system. I discuss the validity of White's theory of educational evaluation in terms of educational aims and learning, respectively. Experientialism proves the validity of the Well-being in terms of educational aims and the philosophical analysis of Hamlyn for learning supports the discussion of the validity of the profile. As a result of the discussions, White's theory of educational evaluation was proved to be a sound theory applicable to our educational system and the necessity of more specific discussion on ‘aims-based educational evaluation’ was proposed.
