학교교육에서 제공되어야 할 교육적 경험의 특성에 관한 연구 : 존 듀이의 교육론을 중심으로

학생 개인의 삶의 질 향상과 사회의 발전을 위해 교육의 질을 회복하는 것은 무엇보다도 중요한 문제이다. 현재의 교육은 학교교육을 중심으로 이루어지고 있기 때문에 학교교육에서 제공되는 교육적 경험의 질은 우리 교육의 성패와 직결된다. 본고에서는 교육적 경험의 회복을 위해 듀이의 교육론에 토대하여 학생들에게 제공되어야 하는 교육적 경험의 특성을 밝혀보는 데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 먼저 듀이가 말하는 ‘경험’과 ‘교육적 경험’의 의미에 대해 탐구하였다. 듀이는 ‘하나의 경험’이라는 아이디어를 도입함으로써 진정한 경험의 모습에 대해 설명하였고, 경험의 두 가지 원리를 통해 ‘교육적 경험’에 대해 논의한다. 다음으로 교육적 경험의 특성을 밝히기 위해 교육적 경험의 개념을 학교교육과 연관하여 탐구하였다. 탐구의 결과 학교교육에서 제공되는 경험이 교육적 가치를 지니기 위해서는 그것이 학습자의 측면에서 완결된 경험을 가질 수 있도록 경험의 제공자에 의해 선별되는 과정을 거쳐야 함을 알 수 있었다. 결론에서는 본고의 논의를 정리하고, 진정한 교육적 진보를 위해서는 삶의 근원적인 부분에서부터 시작하는 교육적 고찰이 필요함을 제안하였다.
Abstract
For the improvement of students' life and social development, the most important task is to recover quality of education. Since the modern education has been usually performed with school education, the quality of educative experience which is provided from the school education is connected directly to success of education. In this context, for the recovery of the quality of educative experience, this study aims to discover the characteristics of the educative experience, which school education should provide, based on Dewey's educational thoughts. This paper deals with two topics. First of all, it explores the concept of Dewey's ‘experience’ and ‘educative experience'. Dewey explained concretely the concept of experience through the idea of ‘an experience’ and the meaning of educative experience with the two principles of experience. Second, it considers the characteristics of educative experience in connection with school education. It proposes that the educative experience should be offered in the form of ‘consummatory experience’ and ‘selected experience' for improving its educational value. Finally, it is claimed that we need to make a conscious effort to examine the various educational issues from the view point of life in its elemental form for the real educational progress.
