구성주의와 듀이 지식론의 관련성: 재해석

최근에 우리나라 교육 실제에 큰 영향을 준 구성주의적 관점의 중요한 이론적 전제는 전통적인 실재론을 거부하고 지식이 인식주체인 개인에 의해서 능동적으로 구성되고 있다는 것이다. 이때까지 이러한 구성주의적 관점은 일반적으로 듀이의 지식론과 직접, 간접으로 관련을 맺는 것으로 평가되어 왔다. 듀이의 지식론에서도 분명히 지식 형성에 개입하는 ‘능동적 참여자’로서의 학습자를 존중하고 있기 때문이다. 그러나, 구성주의의 관점과 듀이의 지식론이 과연 동일한가 하는 데에는 의문의 여지가 있다. 즉, 듀이적 프래그머티즘과 구성주의적 인식론 간에는 핵심이 되는 인식론적, 존재론적 논제들이 공유되지 않는 것으로 파악되는 것이다. 그 공유되지 않는 부분이라는 것은 인식에 있어서의 행위의 지위, 진리의 대응론, 그리고 인간의 의식과 실재의 관계를 파악하는 상이한 관점에 기인한다. 만약 본고의 이러한 가정이 타당한 것이라면 양자의 입장을 동일한 맥락에서 논의하는 것은 듀이 지식론에서의 핵심적 포인트를 놓치는 셈이 될 것이다. 본고에서는 이러한 문제의식에 입각하여 구성주의적 인식론과 듀이 지식론의 관점을 지식 구성의 측면을 중심으로 비교, 검토함으로써 듀이의 지식론을 재해석하고 그 교육적 시사점을 밝히고자 하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare the viewpoint of Dewey on the knowledge acquisition with constructivism, and to reinterpret Dewey's theory of knowledge. An important, theoretical premise of constructivism is to reject the traditional realism, and to insist on the active construction of knowledge by the individual knowers. Generally, this viewpoint of constructivism has been considered as a theory related to Dewey's theory of knowledge. Of course, Dewey emphasizes the individual learner as an active participant of knowledge construction. However, there are some questions about the identity of the viewpoints of the knowledge acquisition between Dewey and constructivism. It seems that Dewey's pragmatism cannot be viewed as an identical theory with constructivism in view of epistemological and ontological aspects. In other words, the viewpoint to interpret the relation between knower and objective reality, mind and truth is different for the two. In this context, this study is to inquire the difference of the two in view of the knowledge acquisition, and to elucidate some educative implications of Dewey's theory of knowledge.
