본 논문은 근대 페미니스트 이론의 정초(定礎)를 다진 것으로 평가받는 『여성의 권리의 옹호』에서 울스턴크래프트가 주장하고 있는 여성 교육론을 다루고 있다. 그녀는 이 책을 통하여 일반적으로 남성적 특성으로 인식되던 이성과 논리가 교육의 결과임을 보여주고자 하였다. 즉 그녀는 이 책에서 남성과 여성 사이에는 육체적 차이만 존재할 뿐이며 이성, 지식, 정신에는 성차가 없으므로 인간의 본성을 공유하는 여성도 남성처럼 이성적 능력을 행사할 수 있음을 보여주고자 하였다. 이러한 논지를 전개하는 과정에서 그녀는 여성들의 이성 능력의 발달을 저해하는 특정한 방식들이 사회 안에서 일정한 힘으로 작용하고 있다는 사실을 들추어내고 있다. 여성의 육체적 허약성이 성차별과 여성 종속의 근원으로 작용하고 있으며, 잘못된 사회적 편견과 그런 사회적 편견을 형성시키고 강화시키는 여성 교육이 여성을 ‘남성의 위안거리’로 전락시킨다고 그녀는 보았던 것이다. 남녀 모두가 이성적이고 책임 있는 민주 시민으로 성장하고, 부부 역시 사랑보다는 이해와 우정에 근거한 평등한 관계를 가꾸어가야 한다고 그녀는 주장한다. 그녀는 여성이 남성과 동등한 위치에서 계몽적 주체로서 자립할 수 있는 가능성을 교육에 기대하였다. 그러한 기대는 양성이 남녀공학의 형태로 동일한 교육을 받아야 하며, 대학 교육이 여성에게도 허용되어야 한다는 교육적 주장으로 연결된다. 그녀는 19세기와 20세기 초 페미니즘에서 여성의 해방에 있어서 가장 큰 조건으로 인식되던 여성의 교육에 대한 요구를 전면적으로 내세운 여성 사상가라는 점에서 그 교육사적 의미가 크다고 할 수 있다. 반면 그녀는 남성 중심의 담론을 그대로 여성에게 적용함으로써 궁극적으로 남성과 같아지는 여성을 해방된 여성상으로 그리고 있다는 데서 그 한계를 보여주고 있다.
Abstract
This treatise deals with the thoughts on the woman-education which are presented in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman written by M. Wollstonecraft. Her book is usually evaluated as a classic in the field of modern feminism. She attempted to turn out that the reason and logic which were regarded as the exclusive rights of men resulted from the education throughout that book. According to her opinion there is only the physical difference between man and woman. It is natural that the woman possess and practice thinking ability based on the reasoning like men. Developing this argument, she exposed the social influence which hindered the woman from unfolding her reason. She thought that the sex discrimination and the woman's dependence on the man resulted from the women's physical weakness. She emphasized there was the prejudice against the women in the society and the education for the woman was strengthening such a social prejudice. She insisted that men and women all together should grow to be resonable, responsible citizens and a married couple should develop the equal relationship based on the mutual understanding and fellowship. She expected that the education could make the women independent. She insisted that both the sexes should be given the equal education. Such an equal education would make the women play their parts in the home and in the society well. This thought made her propose that boys and girls should be educated together in the same school and the women also should be given the opportunity to study in the university. It is valued highly that she was the first woman thinker to claim the right of education for women in the history. The right of education was regarded as the condition precedent of the woman emancipation by the feminists in the late 19th century and early 20th century. On the other hand she applied male-centered discourse to the women and she described the woman like men as the emancipated woman. It resulted in the suppression of the feminity by woman.
