자유주의적 지식교육관에 대한 비판적 고찰

초록

본 연구는 현대 자유주의 정치철학의 논의 맥락에 비추어 자유주의 사상에 따른 학교 지식교육의 성격과 문제점을 살펴보고 나아갈 방향을 모색하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해서 제2장에서는 자유주의 사상의 특징 및 그에 따른 학교 지식교육의 특성을 살펴본다. 자유주의 사상에 따른 학교 지식교육의 특성으로는 가치중립적인 교육내용의 전달, 깊이 있는 입문이나 헌신보다는 개인의 가치 선택을 위해 피상적인 수준에서 다양한 가치들을 소개하는 교육방법의 강조, 자율적 판단능력을 가진 인간의 양성 등을 제시한다. 제3장에서는 자유주의적 지식교육의 특성에 내포된 문제점을 논의하면서 학교의 지식교육이 나아갈 방향을 모색한다. 첫째, 공적 영역 중심의 교육내용이 가지는 도구적 성격 및 한계를 지적하고, 비공적 영역의 가치가 교육내용으로 적극적으로 고려되어야 함을 논의한다. 둘째, 교육방법 면에서 입문이나 교화, 헌신 등의 교육방법의 중요성을 지적한다. 셋째, 교육받은 인간 및 좋은 삶의 형성이라는 측면에서, 판단능력을 갖춘 자율적 인간 형성과 더불어 개인의 통일된 삶의 이야기를 적극적으로 만들어가는 교육의 중요성을 설명한다.

Abstract

A political perspective has been emphasized in education since the debate between liberalism and communitarianism began in 1980. In the context of political philosophy on liberalism this study tries to examine the nature of knowledge education of liberalism, pursuing directions of knowledge education in a school. In the chapter 2 the characteristics of liberalism are explained. According to these characteristics, the features of knowledge education in liberalism are analyzed: 1)the contents of education should be value-neutral, especially including public procedural principles, 2)the method of education should be 'to introduce' various values in an abstract level to students than 'to initiate' them into specific values in a deeper level, and 3)the ideal of educated person should be an autonomous person who can judge and choose values for themselves. In the chapter 3 the problems of knowledge education in liberalism are critically discussed. First, I point out the instrumental nature of the contents of education which emphasize the principles of the public domain, suggesting to include the neglected comprehensive values in nonpublic domain as the educational contents. Second, I discuss on the importance of the educational methods such as initiation, indoctrination, and commitment. Third, I discuss how to balance between raising an autonomous person with the ability of judgment and raising the person who can construct the narrative unity of individual life.
