이 논문은 배려교육론의 특성을 드러내고, 그것의 교육적 의미와 한계를 드러내는데 목적이 있다. 이러한 목적을 위해 페미니즘의 관점에서 자유교육론의 문제점을 지적하고, 배려교육론의 주요특징을 자유교육과의 비교를 통해 제시하였다. 배려교육의 관점에서 볼 때, 합리성, 자율성, 보편성을 강조하는 자유교육론은 관계성, 정서, 구체적인 맥락을 간과하는 경향이 있다. 배려교육은 모든 학생들이 각자의 능력과 개성을 발달시키면서도 배려할 줄 아는 (도덕적인) 인간으로 성장하는 것을 목적으로 삼으며, 이를 위해서는 지식의 형식이 아닌 배려의 핵심 요소들로 교육과정을 재구성해야 한다. 교육이 인간의 전인적인 발달을 추구하고 실질적인 좋은 삶을 사는데 기여해야 한다고 볼 때, 배려교육론은 여성적 가치의 재인식, 전통적 교육과정의 재검토, 교사-학생관계의 회복이라는 점에서 교육적 의미를 가진다. 그러나 배려교육론과 배려의 핵심요소가 자유교육론과 지식의 형식을 대체할 수 있는 것인지에 대해서는 보다 정교한 논의를 필요로 한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to clarify caring education compared with liberal education and discuss its educational implications and tasks. Caring educationists criticise liberal education from the perspective of feminism. According to them, liberal conception of education tends to stress on the traits of autonomy, rationality and universality, whereas it overlooks the traits of relationship, emotion, context, and so on. Caring educationists address the educated people which are developing all-rounded human aspects instead of the educated man that is the development of reason or rationality. They insist that education should be organized against the themes of care in general and the centers of care in particular rather than the forms of knowledge. From the perspective of caring education, all students should be engaged in the various centers of care, i.e. caring for self, intimate others, global others, animals, plants, the environment, objects and instruments, and ideas. Caring education has some educational implications in terms of restating ignored feminine values, reconsidering traditional curriculum and recovering the relation of teacher-student. In our context, caring education might be possible to solve some difficulties of liberal education which are both the pursuit of knowledge of rationality and the promotion of personal autonomy. However, caring education should be still answered and discussed the question whether it can be an alternative to liberal education.
