Abstract

The purpose of the study is to try to analyze Gaesung Industrial Complex Project using ‘systematical thinking’. North Korea facing severe economic deadlock is adopting a limited market economy system partially so as to solve her economic difficult bottleneck. The Gaesung Industrial Complex project commenced on August 22, 2000 when Hyundai-Asan and the North’s Asia-Pacific Committee and the National Economic Cooperation Federation signed an agreement on the development. The necessity and interest of industrial special district in North Korea in which a direct investment can be made, has been increased for the purpose of enlargement of economic exchange between North and South Korea, her economic restoration through economic cooperation, strengthening of industry competitiveness for North and South Korea, and the balanced development of Korean Peninsula. With these in mind, this study uses the methodology of ‘systematical thinking’ to analyze the dynamic complexity and the causal relationships among various factors affecting effectiveness and efficiency of the Gaesung Industrial Complex in a comprehensive and systematic way. North Korea should make best efforts to improve the distorted relation with U.S. not to lose biggest market in the world, and South Korea should lead North Korea to keep transition to an open society and market economy.
