본 연구에서는 J. A. 코메니우스가 저술한 『세계도회』의 아동교육적 의미를 고찰하고자 하였으며, 이를 위해『세계도회』의 내용을 ‘책의 구성’, ‘범주의 구조’, ‘그림의 구성’의 세 가지로 구조화하여 분석하였다. 이러한 분석을 통해 드러난 『세계도회』의 아동교육적 의미는 우선 아동의 발견을 통해 기존의 어른 중심 교육을 아동 중심교육으로 변화시켰으며, 아동을 위한 감각적인 교육 경험을 제공하였을 뿐만 아니라 교육 경험의 통합, 교육 매체 간의 통합을 시도하였다는 점에서 찾을 수 있다. 또한 그림을 하나의 교육 매체로 도입함으로써 그림을 보는교육적인 관점을 제시하였고, 그림을 교육 매체로 활용함으로써 시각적 사고력 교육의 단초를 제공하였다는 점에서도 의미가 있다. 『세계도회』는 150개의 그림들 속에 동물, 식물과 같은 자연을 재현한 그림들뿐만 아니라 신의섭리, 최후의 심판, 윤리학, 근면 등과 같이 상징적․추상적 은유의 모둠인 그림들, 신과 같이 고도로 추상화된그림을 함께 포함하고 있다. 이는 『세계도회』가 사물을 재현한 그림들을 통해 단순히 아동의 흥미와 관심을 끄는데서 그치지 않고 그림을 통한 언어 교육은 물론 시각적 사고력 교육을 시도하였음을 잘 보여주는 것으로서 아동교육에 있어 그 의미가 크다고 볼 수 있다. 향후 ‘세계도회’라는 책 제목의 제고는 물론 언어 교육적 측면, 그림의 교육적 활용 측면 등 다양한 관점에서 『세계도회』에 관한 관심과 연구가 지속되어야 할 것으로 보인다.
Abstract
This study discussed the significance of J. A. Comenius' 『Orbis Sensualium Pictus』 in Children's Education and structuralized the contents of 『Orbis Sensualium Pictus』 into three categories--‘Composition of book’, ‘Structure of Categories’, and ‘Composition of Pictures’--for the analysis. In children's education, 『Orbis Sensualium Pictus』 is significant as it changed adult-centered education to children-centered education, provided sensible education to children, and attempted the integration of educational experience and educational media. Also, pictures were introduced as a form of educational medium to suggest the educational perspective toward pictures and used them for educational purposes to lay the foundation for the education of visual thinking. Among the 150 pictures in 『Orbis Sensualium Pictus』 are the pictures of animals, plants, and other natural objects, as well as the pictures of symbolic and abstract metaphors, such as God's law, the final judgment, ethics, and diligence, and the highly abstract images of God. This clearly shows that 『Orbis Sensualium Pictus』 was not just published to attract the attention of children with the images of objects, but it also attempted the development of language skills and visual thinking skills with the pictures. In this respect, it is highly significant in children's education. In the future, ‘Orbis Sensualium Pictus’ should be discussed and studied from various perspectives, including its title, its linguistic education, and its educational use of pictures.
