이 연구는 신자유주의적 조건 속에서 교육받은 인간의 마음을 성찰하는 데에 목적이 있다. 오늘날 한국은 가히 교육과잉사회라 할 만하며, 과도한 교육적 욕망이 초래하는 심리적 침체와 고통은 한국사회의 공통정서가 되었다. 이 문제는 실증적 탐색과 개별적인 관리의 차원을 넘어서 교육의 본질에 대한 철학적 탐구주제로 다루어질 필요가 있다. 이 연구는 교육받은 주체들의 문제적인 정서로 ‘우울’과 ‘잔혹한 낙관’에 주목하였다. 먼저, 우울과 잔혹한 낙관주의는 신자유주의 시대의 독특한 정동양식이다. 신자유주의는 주체의 자기긍정과 생산에 대한 욕망을 동력으로 삼는다. 과잉된 긍정과 미래에 대한 환상적 기대의 부정적 결과는 한편으로는 소진과 우울로, 또 다른 형태로는 맹목적인 활기와 몰두에 빠지는 잔혹한 낙관으로 나타날 수 있다. 한편, 오늘날 발전된 형태의 교육은 시대적 명령으로서의 긍정주의를 생성하고 정당화하는 기능을 수행한다. 오늘날 교육은 모종의 좋은 미래를 약속하는 시스템으로서, 개인의 능력과 노력이 응분의 성과로 나타날 것이라는 메리토크라시에 대한 믿음과 그러한 삶이 온당하고 아름답다는 환상을 심어준다. 신자유주의적 교육 안에서 우울과 잔혹한 낙관은 다양한 형태의 생존양식으로 나타난다. 이 연구에서는 적응적 주체, 모험적 주체, 냉소적 주체라는 세 가지 교육주체의 유형을 설정하여 신자유주의적 정동의 징후들을 비판적으로 검토하였다. 이는 미시적인 마음의 지형을 정치적으로 사유함으로써 교육의 정동적 부산물에 공적 의미를 부여하고, 나아가서는 한계상황에 대한 내재적 저항의 가능성을 탐색하기 위한 시도이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to reflect on an educated mind in neoliberal conditions. Today, Korea might be called an over-educated society. Because of excessive desire, burn-out and psychological suffering have become a kind of common emotion that educational subjects experience. This problem needs to be treated as a philosophical issue beyond empirical exploration and individual management. This study focused on "depression" and "cruel optimism" as problematic affects of an educated mind. First, these are unique forms of affect in neoliberal era. Neoliberalism is motivated by self-positivity and desire for being productive. The negative consequences of being excessively positive and having fantasy for the future could be internal exhaustion, blind vigor and immersion. In addition, today 's advanced education performs functions of creating and justifying the order of positivity. An education, as a system that promises a good future, produces some belief in meritocracy which means that individual effort and ability must be compensated. Depression and cruel optimism appear in various forms of survival. Conclusionally, this study critically examined signs of neoliberal affects by setting three types of educational subjects: the adaptive subject, the adventurous subject, and the cynical subject.
