본 논문의 목적은 민족독립운동가이자 교육실천가였던 이승훈의 삶을 돌아보고 기독교교육학적 관점에서 그의 교육실천의 의미와 의의를 고찰하는 것이다. 가난한 가정에서 태어나 부모를 여의고 어린 나이에 냉엄한 삶의 현장에서 뛰어든 이승훈은 시대적 혼란 속에서도 정직과 능력으로 젊은 나이에 주목받은 실업인으로 이미 성장했다. 안창호를 통해 국가와 민족의 미래를 향한 사명을 깨달은 이승훈은 중년의 나이에 개화사상을 받아들이고 오산학교를 설립하여 민족계몽운동의 반열에 뛰어드는 삶의 대전환을 맞는다. 그러던 그는 기독교신앙을 받아들인 후 기독교의 예언자적 사명에 입각한 민족계몽교육 및 교육공동체건설을 위해 매진하였다. 특히 이승훈은 삼일운동의 한가운데서 기독교, 천도교, 불교의 연합을 통해 삼일운동이 거국적인 민족독립운동이 되는데 초석이 되었다. 여러 번의 옥고와 일제의 탄압에도 불구하고 그의 기독교 애국계몽을 위한 정신과 현신으로 말미암아 많은 민족의 후학들을 배출하였다. 그의 삶은 끊임없는 도야의 과정으로 평가할 수 있다. 즉, 이승훈의 일생은 중세봉건주의를 극복하기 위한 근대 이념(보편성과 근원성)을 인재양성의 교육 의지(보편성)를 통해서, 특별히 기독교정신의 근원에 바탕을 두고(근원성) 공동체적 실천(프락시스)으로 구현하고자 했던 도야의 여정이었다. 비록 이승훈은 체계적인 교육사상이나 교육이론을 남기진 않았으나 교육을 삶으로 보여준 우리 민족 근대사의 대표적인 교육자라고 평가할 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to review the life of Seung-Hoon Lee who was an independence activist and educational practitioner during the Japanese colonial period, and to examine the meaning and significance of his educational ideas and practices from a Christian educational perspective. Born into a poor family, Lee lost his parents and already entered the environment of a miserable life in his childhood, but he has grown into a remarkable businessman at the young age for his honesty and ability despite the turmoil of the times. Realizing his being destined for the future of the nation and the people when he met Chang-ho Ahn, Lee accepted the enlightenment thought in his middle age and reached a big turning point in his life. Then, he established Osan(which literally means five mountains) school and jumped into the national enlightenment movement. Based on his Christian faith, Lee worked hard to build an educational community for people enlightenment. In particular, he served as the cornerstone of the March 1st Independence Movement through a coalition of Christians, Cheondoists, and Buddhists. Despite the hardships of prison life and the severe oppression and exploitation under Japanese colonial rule, he produced a lot of national leaders from Osan school through his great efforts on the Christian education. His spirit and life can be seen as a constant process of the “Bildung” in German. In other words, he tried to embody the modern world view of universality and radicality. Seen from the epistemological point of view, modernism is understood to have been developed with two goals of universality and radicality. Universality refers to universal knowledge that is acceptable to everyone, not knowledge to be enjoyed only by a few intellectuals or privileged classes. Thus, universal knowledge that anyone can acquire through experiences has led to the development of modern science. Radicality, on the other hand, means the desire to explore the sources or roots of knowledge. Based on the Christian faith, especially the spirit of prophecy, Lee realized the will of universal education and enlightenment in the practice of community. Although he neither systematized nor theorized his educational ideas, he is definitely to be seen as the representative educator of the modern history of Korea whose educational thoughts were materialized through his life.
