Abstract

In a theological and historical study on the relation between biography and thought of a person Kyo-Shin Kim is regarded as an important example. By his life and action he showed how a Christian intellectual embodied his belief into the devotion to the suffering nation. It has been significant for the Korean history as well as in the Korean church history. He acted as a lay leader, stood against the hegemonic group of the church that strived exclusively for the ecclesiastical authority. And he was devoted to the education of the whole nation in the critical distance from the church leaders who were interested in the maintenance and growth of the local church, regardless of the very crises of the nation in the period of the Japanese domination. In this sense his life and action could be evaluated as an unforgettable instance for receiving the Christian thought and bringing it into practice from the perspective of subjectivity.In the framework of investigating historically the influences of the Christianity upon the national education I analyze the intellectual and historical background, behind which Kyo-Shin Kim played his own role in the first step (Chapter II). In the second step I analyze three points of his education thought: national consciousness, historical consciousness and minjung-consciousness (Chapter III). In the third step I see into his education methods (Chapter IV). And in the last step I attempt to evaluate his education activities from his own Christian thought (Chapter V).
