학교의 존재 근거에 대한 비판적 성찰

해방 이후 한국에서 학교는 국가를 위한 인재 양성의 수단이자 개인의 사회적 출세를 위한 제도적 도 구로 간주 되었다. 이에 따른 다양한 사회적 부작용을 해결하기 위해 진보주의적 관점에서 학교를 개혁 하려는 움직임이 일어났으며, 일각에서는 진정한 의미의 교육은 공교육 본위의 학교 제도에서 탈피할 때 비로소 가능하다고 주장하는 급진적인 탈학교론이 설득력을 얻게 되었다. 그러나 작금의 교육적 현 실을 돌이켜 보면, 이러한 과거의 지배적인 학교관들은 부분적으로는 긍정적인 효과를 나타냈음에도 불 구하고 교육의 본질을 실현하는 데에는 그다지 성공하지 못한 것으로 보인다. 그러므로 이 글에서는 과거의 한국 사회에서 지배적이었던 학교관들이 지닌 난점과 한계, 문제점들 에 대하여 분석하여 비판적으로 검토한 뒤, 학교가 존재해야 할 당위적 근거에 대하여 논의하였으며, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학교의 존재 근거는 지성의 계발과 인지적 안목의 형성에 있다. 왜냐하면 학교의 본질은 어디까지나 지식을 습득하고 원리를 이해하며 나아가 세계를 폭넓게 바라볼 수 있는 안목을 형성하는 데 있기 때문이다. 둘째, 학교의 존재 근거는 도덕성의 함양과 교육적 훈육에 있다. 자유는 개인의 도덕성을 기반으로 그 진정한 의미를 드러낼 수 있다는 점에서, 학교는 아동의 자유로운 삶을 실현하기 위하여 교육적 훈육의 책임을 져야 한다. 셋째, 학교의 존재 근거는 문명 세계로의 입문에 있다. 다시 말해 학교는 인류의 지식과 전통이 축적 된 교과를 학습하는 장소가 되어야 한다. 그러므로 학교는 사회에 존재하는 다양한 실제적 문제들에서 어느 정도 격리될 필요가 있다.
Abstract
In the past, in Korea, schools were regarded as a means of cultivating talent for the state and an instrument for individual social advancement. In order to overcome various side effects of this social trend, movements have taken place to change the school progressively and radically. However, these movements do not appear to have been very successful in realizing the essence of education, even though they have had positive effects in part. So this article aims to examine the dominant perspectives of school to identify the reasons of school. The results are as follows. First, the reason for school is to develop intellect and cognitive perspective. Because the essence of school is to acquire knowledge, to understand principle, to broaden the cognitive perspective. Second, the reason for school is to cultivate morality and to practice educational discipline. Freedom must be compatible with morality, therefore the school should be in charge of discipline to realize freedom of students. Third, the reason for school is to initiate to civilized world. In other words, school is a place of learning the subject matters in which accumulated knowledge and traditions of humankind. And so, the place of schooling should be isolated to some extent from society.
