근대 이후 동남아 불교건축의 전개양상과 특성: 태국의 사례를 중심으로

근대 이후, 동남아 지역에서 전개된 불교건축의 흐름과 경향을 종합적으로 파악하고, 그것의 건축특성과 사회문화적 의미를 살펴보는 데에 본 논문의 목적을 둔다. 불교는 동남아 사회를 지탱해온 이념의 뿌리이자 건축을 비롯한 문화와 예술 창조의 근본토대로 작용해왔다. 이것은 근대 이후에도 지속되어 왔다. 하지만 그 내용과 양식에서 근대 이후의 불교건축은 이전 시기와는 확연히 다른 특성을 드러냈다. 과거에 비해 불교의 사회적 기능과 대중적 성격이 확대됨에 따라 종교건축에 대한 사회문화적 인식과 외연이 넓어졌다. 또한 근대의 새로운 건축양식과 기술이 도입되면서 공간과 조형을 구성하는 기본원리와 방식도 크게 달라지는 양상이 나타났다. 즉 불교 자체의 변화와 서양 근대건축의 유입이라는 2가지 요인이 서로 상호작용하면서 미친 영향의 결과로 새로운 양상과 특성이 등장했다. 구체적으로 첫째, 근대사회에서 크게 확대된 불교의 새로운 역할과 성격을 시각적 이미지로 표상화한 사회 차원의 변화이다. 둘째는 서구로부터 도입된 근대건축의 새로운 논리와 기법의 활용과 적용으로 불교건축의 새로운 양식과 특성을 창출한 문예 차원의 재해석이다.
Abstract
This paper delves into the content and form of Buddhist architecture in modern Southeast Asia, with regard to their social role and cultural meaning. In that area Buddhism was the most important idea of society, and thus it had worked as the basic foundation of creating culture and art, including architecture. It is not much changed in the process of modernization, especially in such countries as Thailand, Myanmar, Laos. Buddhist architectures introduced in the Southeast Asian region have been localized through interacting with each native society and its culture. Until now they are also a main source of values dominating the cultural image of Southeast Asia. In the post-colonial period those societies still has kept many of colonial values, like modernization and religious nationalism. Nevertheless, they began rebuilding and renovating many of Buddhist architecture for the purpose to strength national integration and dominant ideology. There are some Buddhist architectures whose stylistic image carries not only conventional meanings but also modified new significations, whereby representing the identity of Buddhist communities and the way of modernizing and developing their tradition.
