Abstract
This study aimed to elucidate the key points of Peters’s critique of Spencer’s proposals for education. Spencer is well-known for his strong conviction ofthe omnipresence of science, which permeates his specific recommendations for education. Peters argued that conceptions such as scientism, evolutionary faith, and atomic individualism were presupposed in all the details of Spencer’s proposals on education. According to Peters, Spencer had attempted to establish a new approach that redefined the concept of life and the true meaning of education based on an evolutionary faith and atomic individualism. Peters pointed out that this approach, as manifested in Spencer’s proposals on education, would be morally dangerous. All details of this study are significant in providing us with important clues for understanding the meaning of such concepts as the normative aspect of education, concept of education as initiation, and transcendence of the forms of life that represent Peters’s educational theory.
