이 글은 20세기 중반 이후 동서양 교육학계에서 강력한 영향을 미쳐온 피터스의 교육 개념을 교육학적 시각과 기독교적인 시각에서 비판적으로 검토하기 위한 시도이다. 피터스는 교육의 개념을 분석철학적규범적 관점과 성년식의 관점에서 규정하고 있다. 그에 의하면, 교육은 ‘모종의 가치 있는 것을 도덕적으로 온당한 방식으로 의도적으로 전달하는 일’이며, 여기에는 교육 개념이 충족시켜야 할 세 가지 준거, 즉 규범적, 인지적, 과정적 준거가 포함되어 있다. 요컨대 교육은 다름 아닌 ‘교육의 세 가지 준거를 만족시키는 방향으로 가치 있는 활동에의 입문’이다.그러나 피터스의 교육 개념은 교육학적 관점이나 기독교적 관점에서 볼 때 몇 가지 문제가 있다. 교육학적인 관점에서 볼 때, 피터스의 교육 개념은 정의 그 자체, 교육 개념이 교육 실제에 미치는 영향, 그리고 교육 개념에 가정되어 있는 교육관 등에 문제가 있다. 기독교의 관점에서 볼 때, 피터스의 교육개념은 그것이 가정하고 있는 세계관, 인간관과 교육관의 문제가 있다. 적어도 마음의 관점에서 볼 때, 교육은 개인적 차원에서는 ‘원만한 마음’을 가지고 ‘생명력 있는 풍성한 삶’을 영위하는 일이며, 종족적 차원에서는 ‘총체적 세계를 회복하고 통일시키는 일’로 보아야 한다.
Abstract
This paper is a critique of Peters's Conception of education from the perspective of education and Christian education. To this end, we explore the background and the basic position from which he defines 'education', the criterion of his conception of education, and criticisms of it from an educational and Christian point of view. Peters's conception of education is based on a position which is analytical and normative in point of view on the one hand, and education as initiation on the other. He defined education as "something worthwhile is being or has been intentionally transmitted in a morally acceptable manner". This definition involves three criteria, i.e. normative, cognitive and procedural criterion. Peters's conception of education can be criticised in terms of definition itself, of its results in educational practice, and of its educational presuppositions from the perspective of education. This definition also shares some of the limitation of world-view that cultural heritage forms the whole world, and a rationalist view of humans and education, which addresses the development of rational mind from the perspective of Christian education.
