이 연구의 목적은, 아리스토텔레스의 교육사상에 들어 있는 자유교육의 이념과 관련하여 ‘실천적 지혜’가 어떤 위치에 있는지를 『니코마코스 윤리학』을 중심으로 살펴보는 데에 있다. 특히, 그의 실천적 지혜 개념에는 자유교육의 이념과 따로 떼어낼 수 없어서 그것의 사회적 실제의 측면이나 실천적‧방법적 지식의 요소들에만 주목해서는 파악되지 않는 또 다른 중대한 차원이 감춰져 있고, 이 차원을 도외시하는 것은 실천적 지혜에 대한 그의 견해뿐 아니라 자유교육의 이념에 따라 건축학적으로 쌓아 올린 그의 교육사상 체계에 왜곡을 초래할 위험이 있다. 그 중대한 차원은, 그의 교육사상에 들어 있는 가르침에 따라 우리 자신의 도덕적 실천과 교육적 실천을 자유교육에 의하여 형성된 눈을 가지고 관조적으로 보려는 경우에만 깨달을 수 있고 이해될 수 있는, 이를테면 ‘실천적 지혜의 관조적 차원’이다. 그리하여 이렇듯 ‘관조’를 지향하는 차원이 ‘실천’에 뿌리를 둔 ‘실천적 차원’과 함께 고려될 때, 비로소 실천적 지혜가 자유교육에서 담당하는 역할과 차지하는 위치가 충분히 드러난다. 그때 비로소 실천적 지혜는, 성품의 교육과 지성의 교육을 하나로 잇는 교육적 실천의 연결고리라는 점, 이에 따라 도덕적 실천과 관조적 활동, 실천적 삶과 관조적 삶을 ‘매개’하거나 전자에서 후자로 ‘인도’하는 중대한 임무를 맡고 있다는 점, 그리하여 ‘철학적 지혜’와 함께 자유교육의 전당을 지탱하는 양대 기둥이라는 점을 분명히 드러낸다
Abstract
This study aims to clarify, with primary reference to the Nicomachean Ethics, the place of practical wisdom (phronēsis, φρόνησις) in Aristotle’s overall conception of liberal education. It argues that Aristotle’s account of practical wisdom includes an additional decisive dimension that is inseparable from the ideal of liberal education. This dimension cannot be fully understood if our view is limited to its connection to social practice or to its pragmatic and methodological aspects. Ignoring this dimension risks distorting both Aristotle’s account of phronēsis and the broader structure of his educational philosophy, which is architecturally organized around the ideal of liberal education. This latent dimension, referred to as the “contemplative dimension of practical wisdom,” becomes apparent only when, following Aristotle’s pedagogical vision, we view our own moral and pedagogical practices contemplatively, with an outlook shaped by liberal education. When this dimension oriented toward theōria (θεωρία) is considered together with the practical dimension found in praxis (πρᾶξις), the proper role and position of practical wisdom within the framework of liberal education become clear. At this point, it is clear that practical wisdom serves as the educational link between the cultivation of character (ēthos, ἦθος) and the cultivation of intellect (nous, νοῦς). It assumes key role of mediating between moral practice and contemplative activity, between practical life and contemplative life, and guiding the practical toward the contemplative. Along with philosophical wisdom (sophia, σοφία), practical wisdom forms one of the two foundational pillars supporting the entire structure of liberal education.
