Abstract
This study reexamines the educational value of “questioning the meaning of life” and explores ways to address this issue within the context of contemporary Korean education, where the high rate of student suicide indicates a significant existential crisis. First, it analyzes Albert Camus’s The Myth of Sisyphus, which philosophically examines the relationship between the “meaninglessness of life” and “suicide.” This analysis highlights the value of questioning the meaning of life as an expression of “existential freedom.” The study also conducts a philosophical-historical examination of the concept of “wonder” as a fundamental attunement to explain why this question has not received sufficient attention in contemporary discourse. Furthermore, this analysis considers Heidegger’s ontology of events and his threefold grounding-attunement―Shock (Erschrecken), Awe (Scheu), and Reservedness (Verhaltenheit)―to examine how the question of the meaning of life can be reconsidered in an era when the question of Being is largely neglected. This approach shows that the question of the meaning of life should be reframed not as a formative inquiry, but as a deconstructive one. The conclusions are as follows. First, in a society where the foundation of absolute truth has been dismantled, the meaning of life should be viewed as an open structure that can be continually deconstructed and reconstructed. Second, questioning the meaning of life should be seen not as an attempt to define meaning, but as an expression of “existential freedom” that allows individuals to continue living even when life appears meaningless. Third, for education to become a space where such questioning arises, teachers should focus not on transmitting predetermined meaning, but on creating opportunities for students to engage with and experience these questions. Ultimately, this study argues that when such questioning is treated as a central educational concern, students can experience existential transformation through the process of enduring the question, which opens the possibility for ontological education.
