본 연구는 지배－결속 이론(Government & Binding Theory)으로 시작되어 최소이론(Minimalist Program)으로 이어지는 생성문법의 테두리 안에서 흔히 목적어의 부재를 공범주로 간주하여 설명하려는 관점을 벗어나 인간의 자연 언어에는 PRO, pro, wh흔적, NP흔적 등의 공범주(Empty category) 이외에도 또 다른 무형 요소가 있어 국어의 목적어 생략 현상은 이러한 무형 요소로 설명할 수 있고, 지금까지 생성문법의 테두리 내에서 알려진 공범주가 아닌 이러한 무형 요소는 그 분포와 해석이 문장 문법의 차원을 넘어서는 원리에 의해 보다 잘 설명될 수 있음을 보여주려는 시도를 한다. 따라서 본 연구는 국어의 목적어 생략 현상에 관여하는 비통사적 제약이 무엇인지를 국어의 목적어 생략 현상을 중심으로 살펴보고, 개연성의 개념을 사용하여 무표적 해석과 유표적 해석의 차이로부터 무형 대명사의 출현에 대한 수용성의 차이가 나타남 보여주면서 무형 대명사 해석 원리를 제안한다. 이처럼 국어의 무형 목적어는 대명사적 요소이므로 모든 대명사적 요소에 적용되는 해석 및 통사적 제약에 따라야 할 뿐만 아니라 구조적 생략인 무형 대명사이므로 담화 차원의 비통사적 제약인 무형 대명사 해석 원리도 지켜야 한다.
Abstract
This paper investigates object ellipsis phenomenon in Korean. First, it argues that null argument in object position is base-generated as structural ellipsis, differently from Generative Grammar’s empty categories analysis as variable or pro. Second, we will formulate the Null Pronoun Interpretation Principle, which is the constraint on the distribution of this structural ellipsis defined as null pronoun in this paper, and illustrate that the sentence grammar alone can’t successfully account for distribution and interpretation of the null argument in object position. We will suggest that in order to account for the examples which are apparent counterexamples to the empty categories analysis, we must use the discourse notion as marked/unmarked interpretation in given context.
