초록

본 논문은 통사부와 의미부의 접점이 게르만어유형론과 관련 문법규칙들이 통시적 인 문법화과정과 어떤 상관관계를 맺는지를 고찰해 본다. 독일어와 영어의 관련된 자료 들을 중심으로 본 연구는 형태론 상 격표지가 된 구조들, 수동태 및 통합절 구조, 의문 사구 적출현상, 관계절 적출현상 등을 다룬다. 이러한 기능주의적 유형론에 입각한 연 구에서 영어에 나타난 주어중심적인 문법구조들은 게르만어 유형론에 비추어 가장 극 단적인 경우로 해석되어 질 수 있다. 또한 Li & Thompson의 연구에서 전통적으로 전 형적인 주어 중심적 언어로 분석되어온 독일어의 경우에도 보다 정밀하게 조사해 보면 주어중심적인 구조가 상당히 제한되어 있음을 경험적 자료를 통해 알 수 있다. 따라서 점위적 유형론(prominence typology)에서 주어중심(subject-prominent)과 주제중심언어 (topic- prominent)로 구분하는 전통적인 이분법에 문제가 있음을 지적하고 이 유형론을 더 발전시켜 의미적 투명성을 보다 뚜렷하게 보여주는 독일어와 반대로 의미상 불투명 한 문법관계를 보이는 영어구조의 이면에 존재하는 서로 상반된 문법화방향을 제시한 다. 문법화과정에서 통사적 규칙이 더욱 발달하게 된 영어의 경우 주어의 영역이 격표 지와 상관없이 불투명하게 확대되며 반면에 독일어의 경우 문법화규칙은 보수적인 성 향을 띄게 된다. 결국 문법관계에서 의미적 투명성과 통사적 규칙의 발달방향은 서로 이질적이며 반비례적인 성격을 담지하게 된다. 이러한 관점은 언어적 표현을 통한 인간 의 인지과정과 문법규칙의 통시적 발달과정(문법화과정), 그리고 언어수행(language performance) 간에 깊은 상관관계가 있음을 보여 준다.
