Abstract

This study aims to develop and validate a practical scale for assessing reading dispositions from multiple dimensions among elementary and secondary school students. Reading disposition was conceptualized as a multidimensional construct encompassing the non-cognitive traits of readers, including psychological, emotional, and behavioral aspects. Five key factors-Reader Agency, Reader Beliefs, Attitudes toward Print Reading, Attitudes toward Digital Reading, and Social Reading-were identified as the core constructs. To ensure the scale's reliability and validity, a range of methodologies was employed, including expert Delphi reviews, cognitive interviews with students, and focus group interviews (FGIs) with teachers. Following a pilot study involving 472 elementary and middle school students and a main survey with 42,517 students spanning elementary, middle, and high school levels, the final scale was refined to 28 items. Repeated factor analyses confirmed the scale’s reliability and validity, with all factors demonstrating strong model fit and effectively measuring reading disposition. The reading disposition scale developed in this study provides a robust framework for comprehensively understanding the non-cognitive characteristics of readers. As a universal scale applicable to both elementary and middle school students, it enables practical comparative analysis across school levels. Additionally, by encompassing both print and digital reading contexts, the scale reflects changes in the reading environment and offers a more comprehensive understanding of diverse dimensions of reading disposition.
