Abstract

This study analyzed the effect of providing subheadings on high school students' reading comprehension. A total of 207 students from Daejeon were divided into two groups: one without subheadings (Group 1) and one with subheadings (Group 2), and they completed reading tasks with expository and narrative texts. The data were analyzed using ANCOVA and independent samples t-tests. The results showed that Group 2 had significantly higher reading comprehension scores than Group 1(p=.006). Subheadings were particularly effective for students with lower reading proficiency(p=.002), and the effect of providing subheadings was observed in both expository and narrative texts (p=.000, p=.007). These findings suggest that subheadings help students understand text structure and key information, especially for those with lower reading abilities. Future research should explore the effects of subheadings across different learner levels and text types.
