Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in intergenerational contact between older parents and their adult children over time. In addition, relying on life-course perspective, this study also examined the impacts of life transitions of older parents and their children on the frequency of intergenerational contact. The data were drawn from the 1-6 waves of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA), collected from 2006 to 2016. The sample included 1,851 older parents with information on their 6,575 adult children. Multi-level analysis was used to investigate changes in the frequency of contact between older parents and their adult children. In addition, multinomial logistic regressions were conducted to explore the associations between life transitions of older parents and their children and changes in the frequency of intergenerational contact. The results are as follows. First, this study found that life transitions of older parents and their children were significantly related to the changes in intergenerational contact. When adult children experienced spouse loss due to widowhood or divorce, they were likely to maintain low-frequency contact with their fathers. In addition, when adult children experienced the transition to being a parent, the frequency of contact with their fathers was likely to change from low-frequency to high-frequency. Second, when fathers had more children, they were likely to have more children who meet more than once a week. On the other hand, when adult children have more siblings, they were less likely to maintain low-frequency of contact with their older parents. The findings suggest that intergenerational contact fluctuates over the life course according to major life transitions responding to the needs and available resources of older parents and their children.
