세대 간 돌봄이 성인 자녀와 부모 간의 지리적 근접성에 미치는 영향

초록

사회적인 돌봄 지원이 부족하여 가족이 그 돌봄 역할을 수행하는 한국의 현실에서, 중·노년기 부모는 자신의 성인 자녀로부터 돌봄을 받거나 성인 자녀를돌봐주어야 할 때 세대 간 동거를 시작하거나 근거리로 이사를 할 수 있다. 하지만 그동안의 선행연구들에서는 세대 간 돌봄의 양방향성에 대한 고려가 적었고, 이러한 가족돌봄 필요가 세대 간 지리적 근접성에 미치는 영향에 대한 규명이 충분히 이루어지지 않았다. 특히 자녀와 동거는 하지 않으면서 인접한 곳으로 이사하는 거주지 변화를 주제로 한 한국에서의 실증연구는 더욱 찾아보기가어렵다. 이러한 배경에서 본 연구는 고령화연구패널 1~4차년도 자료의 15,118 중고령 부모-성인 자녀 자료를 활용하여 (손)자녀 출생, 손자녀 돌봄, 중고령 부모의 일상생활수행능력(Activities of Daily Living: ADL), 도구적 일상생활생활능력(Instrumental ADL: IADL)이 성인 자녀와의 동거 시작과 근접한 곳으로의 거주지 이동에 미치는 영향을 패널로짓모형으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 중고령부모의 도구적 일상생활수행능력에 제한이 있을 때 성인 자녀와 동거를 시작하거나 가까운 곳으로 이주하는 경우가 늘어나는 반면, 중고령 부모의 일상생활수행능력에 제한이 있을 때는 자녀의 근거리로 이주하는 경우가 줄어들었다. 또한손자녀가 출생하거나 어린 손자녀를 돌볼 때, 중고령 부모는 성인 자녀와 동거를 시작하거나 근거리로 이주하는 경우가 늘어나는 것으로 나타났다. 인구이동이 세대 간 돌봄 필요에 영향을 받는다는 것을 실증한 이러한 분석 결과는 가족정책이 돌봄(보육과 장기요양), 인구, 주거정책과 긴밀하게 협력해야 할 것이라는 시사점과 아울러 가족 특히 여성에게 전가되어 있는 돌봄의 책임을 줄이기위한 사회적인 노력이 요구된다는 함의를 가진다.

Abstract

This study uses longitudinal data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) to examine whether intergenerational coresidence onset (question #1) and onset of living in closer proximity (question #2) are influenced by grandchild birth and parents’ grandchild care, as well as potential needs of older parents to receive care in South Korea. The participants in this study were 15,118 older parents aged 47 years old or over in 2008 (the mean age in 2008: 68 years old) and their adult children drawn from the KLoSA survey 2008-2012 (wave 2-4). I used panel logistic regression model analyses to examine the influence of mutual care needs such as grandchild birth, older parents’ grandchild care, and Activities of Daily Living (ADL)/Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) limitations of older parent on coresidence onset and the onset of living within 30 minutes. Important findings in this study are that South Korean older parents and their adult children not only begin coresidence but also begin living in closer proximity when adult children give birth to own children and older parents take care of their grandchildren. Moreover, they begin coresidence and living in closer proximity when older parents have IADL limitations, even though severe ADL limitations of older parent hinder begin living in close proximity. Taken together, these results indicate that the mutual support that older parents and adult children provide one another is growing, and it even strengthens intergenerational structural solidarity.
