Abstract
In this paper I start with the early controversy between the money hypothesis(Friedman and Schwartz, 1963) and the spending hypothesis(Temin, 1976) as to the cause of the Great Depression in 1930s. Then, I examine arguments that the Great Depression was deepened and protracted by financial factors including contraction of currency. The early controversy focused on the failure(bankruptcy) of bank and of the Federal Reserve policy which caused currency contraction. But this attempt to explain the Great Depression only through theses factors has several limits. Thus the arguments on the Great Depression hereafter for overcoming these limits have paid their attention on the destabilizing effects of deflation and collapse of credit intermediation function. These explanations of the Great Depression made by these arguments could reveal more fully the successively developing process of the crisis: real crisis, money crisis, credit crisis. However, those financial factors cannot sufficiently give empirical evidences to the causality between the bank panics and income in the Great Depression. Therefore, we need more sufficient empirical evidence for illuminating causality problems between these variables.
