Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the burden of housework and women's replacement behavior in dual-earner families. The replacement behavior can be classified into inner and outer behavior. With the outer replacement restricted, this study focuses on the factors influencing the inner replacement. We measure the inner replacement as sleeping hours, discretionary hours and multi-tasking. Data from the 2009, 2014 Korea Time Use Survey were used for this study(n=6,044). We find that types of employment and children are associated with sleeping, discretionary hours, whereas only children are associated with multi-tasking. Compared with part-time women, full-time women with children were lacking sleeping and discretionary hours. We discuss the alternatives for reducing the burden of housework by decreasing the transaction costs to outsource housework.
