2008년 금융위기 이후 신자유주의에 대한 대안을 모색하려는 이론적 작업들이 확대되면서 애덤 스미스에 대한 새로운 해석도 등장하였다. 이는 경제적 자유주의자이자 자유방임주의자로 알려는 스미스에게서 다름 아닌 신자유주의에 대한 대안을 찾고자 한다는 점에서 특히 주목할 만하다. 그러나 스미스와 신자유주의 사상이 근본적으로 다를 자 없다는 점에서 이러한 해석은 신자유주의에 대한 대안을 신자유주의에서 찾는 자기 모순적 해석이라고 볼 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 주장을 정당화하기 위해 스미스에 대한 새로운 해석이 무엇을 주장하는지를 서술할 것이다. 그리고 스미스의 사상을 ‘자연적 자유의 정의로운 실현’으로 재구성하면서 이러한 입장이 신자유주의와 다를 바 없음을 주장할 것이다.
Abstract
After the 2008 financial crisis, theoretical works to seek alternatives to neo-liberalism are expanded, among them a new interpretation of Adam Smith appeared. This is particularly noteworthy because this seeks an alternative to neo-liberalism in Smith who is known as an economic liberalist in the sense of laissez-faire. However Smith and neoliberal ideas are in close agreement. Therefore this interpretation can be viewed as a self-contradictory interpretation in the sense that this seeks an alternative to neo-liberalism in neo-liberalism. In this paper, to justify this claim I will describe what the new interpretation of Smith argues. And I will reconstruct Smith's idea as a "just realization of natural freedom," I will show that this position is no different from neo-liberalism.
