Abstract
It is a commonly believed idea that economists free-ride. We examine if this belief is true and what makes them free-ride. Our public goods game experiments show that economists contribute significantly lower in groups composed only with economists. They were not distinguishable with the students from other major in their contribution when they play the game in groups of mixed majors. We conclude that economists free-ride because of their initial belief that other people would free-ride in public goods game setting, not because of their unique selfish preferences.
