Abstract
In this paper I try to examine the nature of industrial organization and inter-firm relationships in the Silicon Valley. For this purpose, I focus on the product development relationships between entrepreneurial firms and the governance relationship between venture capital and entrepreneurial firms in the Silicon Valley. Entrepreneurial firms usually develop and produce modular parts of a product system, rather than competing with their rival by producing a stand-alone product system in the Silicon Valley. In this respect, Silicon Valley model is much similar to Marshallian industrial district in which resources are allocated through market mechanism. On the other hand, venture capitalists have their role as a mediator of information and structuring governance in relationships with entrepreneurial firms. Venture capital financing in the Silicon Valley has characteristics similar to that of the Japanese relational financing. In conclusion, I suggest that it is not possible to reduce the characteristics of Silicon Valley model either to market or non-market network. Instead, we need to look at multifaceted interactions between these two factors and their contradictory effects on the technological innovation. From this point of view, we can capture both the innovative and crisis-ridden nature of the Silicon Valley model.
