Abstract
This study investigated how structural features of television news programs influence a viewer's memory for news. Two structural features were selected for the investigation: news length and news ticker. Despite TV news is one of the main sources for gaining news in the contemporary society, it has been criticized for a viewer's poor comprehension and memory. Based on previous studies suggesting the presentation styles of TV news influence news memory, this study examined how news length, presence of news ticker, and type of news ticker influence news memory. The results of the study are as follows. First, free recall for news stories was higher for the longer than the shorter news. Second, presence of news ticker impaired the three sub-processes of memory which were indexed by recognition, cued recall, and free recall. Third, types of news ticker (flow type and roll-up type) have marginal effects on news memory in that the difference in memory by the type of news ticker only appeared in the shorter news. Theoretical and practical implications were also discussed.
