본 연구는 지역신문의 규모에 따라 뉴스 게이트키핑 과정과 이 게이트키핑 과정에 작용하는 내․외적 통제 요인에 어떠한 차이가 있는지를 심층 인터뷰를 통해 살펴보았다. 인터뷰 결과, 지역신문의 규모에 따라 게이트키핑 과정에 뚜렷한 차이가 있었다. 즉, ‘규모가 작은 신문’은 ‘규모가 큰 신문’에 비해 게이트키핑 과정이 훨씬 단순하였다. 또 게이트키핑 과정에 작용하는 내․외적 통제 요인에 있어서도 신문의 규모에 따라 분명한 차이가 있었다. 즉, ‘규모가 큰 신문’의 기자들은 신문사 자율규제에 의한 통제와 개인적 차원의 통제, 데스크에 의한 통제 순으로 크게 작용하고 있다고 응답하였다. 반면에 ‘규모가 작은 신문’의 기자들은 경제적 통제와 소유주․경영진에 의한 통제가 절대적이라고 응답해 ‘규모가 큰 신문’과는 뚜렷한 차이를 보였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate how the size of newspaper influence the gatekeeping process in the newsroom. For this purpose, In-depth interviews with journalists are conducted to explain specifically how the size of newspaper organization affect news production process. Interview results show that news production in newspapers of larger size are constrained more by self-censorship of journalists, pressure from the desk and the perceived pressure from the audience. For smaller size newspapers, economic constraints and pressure from the management exert greater press news production in newspapers. but smaller size newspapers are not much constrained by self censorship of journalists, pressure from the desk, the perceived pressure from the audience.
