한·미의 지역일간지 1면 기사의 다양성 요인 비교분석 : 뉴스 주제 및 취재원 유형을 중심으로

이 연구는 한국의 5개 지역일간지와 미국의 중소규모 3개 지역일간지의 1면 기사를 대상으로 기사의 주제, 취재원의 유형 및 수를 비교하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국 지역신문의 경우 중앙정치와 지방행정 등과 관련된 기사의 비율이 압도적으로 많았으나, 미국 신문의 경우 인물/동정, 범죄/법정, 교육/과학과 관련된 기사비율이 가장 높게 나타났다. 이 차이는 또한 통계적으로 유의미했다. 그리고 한국과 미국 지역신문들 모두 발행부수가 상대적으로 많은 신문일수록 좀 더 다양한 주제를 골고루 다루고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 한국 지역신문의 경우 기사당 평균 취재원은 1.75개였고, 실명 취재원의 평균은 1.69개였다. 반면에 미국 지역신문의 경우 평균 취재원 수는 5.26개이고, 취재원 중 실명 취재원 수의 평균은 4.56개였다. 즉 미국의 중소규모 지역신문들은 한국 지역신문들에 비해 취재원의 수는 3.51개, 실명 취재원의 수는 2.95개 더 많이 사용한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 한국의 5개 지역신문 모두가 중앙 행정부처 및 관료들을 취재원으로 활용한 비율이 전체 평균치보다 높은 반면 일반인과 사회시민단체의 취재원 활용 비율은 미국의 3개 지역신문이 전체 평균치보다 높았다. 특히, 5개 국내 지역신문 중에 제주지역 3개 신문의 경우 뉴스의 주제, 취재원의 유형, 취재원의 수 등에 있어서 타 신문에 비해 가장 편협되어 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구의 가장 중요한 의의는 한국과 미국의 지역일간지의 1면 기사 내용을 처음으로 비교분석해 국내 지역일간지들끼리 비교할 경우 잘 드러나지 않을 수도 있는 기사의 다양성 정도를 확인했다는 점이다.
Abstract
This study compared the front pages of five local Korean daily papers against three small-and medium-sized local American daily papers in terms of article topics, types, as well as their number of news sources. The research came up with the following results. First, most of the articles in the local Korean papers discussed the topics of central politics and local public administration whereas the American papers covered topics related to public figures, state of the nation, crimes, court cases, education, and science. This difference had statistical significance. Moreover, both the local Korean and American newspapers more sufficiently cover a wider range of topics as their circulation figures increase. Secondly, the local Korean newspapers had an average of 1.75 news sources per article, and they had an average of 1.69 news sources under real names. In comparison to this, the local American newspapers had an average of 5.26 news sources per article, and they have an average of 4.56 news sources under real names. Thus, the small- and medium-sized local American newspapers have 3.51 and 2.95 more news sources and sources under real names, respectively, in comparison to their Korean counterparts. Furthermore, all five local Korean newspapers more frequently sourced their data from central ministries and officials, and the frequency was higher than the total average rate. On the contrary, the three local American newspapers more frequently sourced their data from the members of public and civil groups, and the frequency was also higher than the total average rate. Among the five local Korean newspapers, the three newspapers in Cheju had the most one-sided view and poorly balanced news topics, article types, and number of news sources as compared to any other newspaper. This study is highly significant because it compared and analyzed the content of the front pages of local Korean newspapers against American newspapers for the first time, and it examined the degree of diversification of articles, which may not be seen when the dailies are simply compared with other Korean newspapers.
