한․미 탐사보도 성격 비교 연구

이 연구는 한국 탐사보도와 미국 탐사보도를 분석해서 한․미 탐사보도의 성격을비교하고자 했다. 탐사보도를 정의하는 이론적 논의를 종합해 탐사보도의 요건을 주제의 공공성, 취재의 독자성, 보도의 폭로성, 사회변화의 촉매 역할 등 4개로 유형화하고 한국 탐사보도와 미국 탐사보도가 얼마나 이러한 요건에 충실한지 비교했다. 한국기사 64건, 미국기사 46건에 대한 내용분석 결과, 주제의 공공성을 제외한 3개 요소에서 한국기사와 미국기사는 뚜렷한 차이를 보였다. 미국기사는 한국기사보다 은폐된현실을 드러내는 폭로성과 사실 검증에 더 충실했다. 취재 과정의 탐사 집중도나 기사작성의 전문성 차원도 미국 기자들이 더 전문적인 것으로 나타났다. 전체적으로 한국탐사보도는 공공성 있는 주제를 선정하지만, 이를 기사로 만들어가는 뉴스 생산 과정전반에 전문성이 부족한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이러한 분석결과를 토대로 이 연구는 한국탐사보도가 나가야 할 대안적 방안으로 미디어 조직 내 탐사보도팀의 독자성에 대한인정, 저널리즘의 기본 원칙인 사실 검증 강화, 탐사보도의 취재와 기사작성 과정을전문화 할 수 있는 탐사보도 전문기자 제도의 도입 등을 제시했다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare the characteristics of Korean and U.S. investigative journalism by analyzing each country’s investigative reporting. By combining theoretical discussions on what defines investigative journalism, the requirements of investigative reporting were categorized into four types: dealing with public matters, guaranteeing independence of investigative reporting team, exposing corruption in the society, and facilitating social change. A comparative analysis was conducted to examine to what extent Korean and American investigative journalism adhere to the four abovementioned factors. The analysis of 64 Korean articles and 46 U.S. articles showed that Korean and U.S. articles were significantly differed in all aspects except dealing with public matters. Compared to Korean articles, U.S. articles focused more on uncovering the hidden reality and verifying facts. Furthermore, American journalists were found to be more professional, due to their profound investigations and expertise in writing articles. On the other hand, Korean investigative reporting tended to deal with public matters, but lacked expertise in the news production process. Based on the results, the present study suggests three alternative ways to improve Korean investigative journalism. First, the independence of the investigative reporting teams should be guaranteed by media organizations. Second, fact checking, which is the basic principle of journalism, should be further strengthened. Lastly, a specialized investigative reporter system should be introduced to develop journalists’ skills in conducting investigative reporting and writing articles.
