본 연구의 목적은 골만(Gorman)이 오래전부터 생각해온 명제로서 어류의 가격이 그 어류거래량과 어류에 대한 소비지출액에 의해 결정된다고 보는 수산시장수요의 특이성과 그 후생분석을 하고자 하는데 있다. 경제학 문헌에서는 이러한 특성을 가진 시장수요체계를 흔히 역수요체계 (Inverse Demand System)라고 부른다. 본 연구는 과연 어류시장이 역수요체계의 시장수요특성을 보여주는 것인지를 살펴보기 위하여, 일상생활에서 자주 접하는 수산시장의 주요 어종들의 수요가 어류가격에 의해 결정되는지, 아니면 골만(Gorman)처럼 어류가격이 어류수요량에 의해 결정되는지를 우-하우스만(Wu-Hausman) 검정을 통하여 살펴보았다. 어류시장에 대한 수요관리정책적 함의로서 이러한 어류시장의 특성에 따라 개별어종들의 쿼터제를 시행할 때, 어획쿼터량의 변화에 의한 소비자후생효과를 측정하는 분석도구를 살펴보고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결과들은 기존의 수산어류시장에 관한 연구들을 보완하는 성격을 가지며, 그 기여와 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 우-하우스만 검정을 통해서 볼 때 골만의 명제처럼 어류시장은 어류가격이 어류수요량에 의해 결정되는 역수요체계의 특성을 가진다. 둘째, 어류시장의 특성에 따라 소비자후생분석의 도구도 달리 사용해야 하며, 힉스의 보상변화를 확장한 ‘수량제약 보상변화’를 통하여 실증적 후생분석을 할 수 있음을 보여주었다. 셋째, 본 연구의 한계로서 어류의 자원스톡이 증가하여 미래의 소비자 후생이 증가할 수 있는 동태적 효과를 무시하고 있으며, 다른 사회후생손실의 부담자인 어류공급자측면을 후생분석에서 고려하지 않은 한계를 가진다.
