Abstract

This study contributes to explain police use of force in Korean circumstance by examining the impacts of police officers' background characteristics, job characteristics (patrol area and shift assignment), and arrest activity on police use of force with an integrated research approach. Survey for police use of force data is conducted on 382 police officers employed in large police agencies in Daegu, Ulsan, and Busan metropolitans. The study examines the impact of these factors on police use of force through ordinary squares(OLS) regressions. Results show that job characteristics and arrest activity have statistically significant effects(p<.01) on police use of force and not police officers' background characteristics. This study suggests specific policy implications in order to refrain from using excessive force of police in the area of officer training, job assignment, and job discipline.
