Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of regular exercise on cognitive function and blood lipid in patient with senile dementia. The subjects were consisted of 30 female patients with senile dementia, they were divided into two groups : the exercise group (n=15) and the control group (n=15). The exercise group participated in regular exercise program, and their MMSE (Mini-mental state examination), blood lipid (total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-C, LDL-C) levels were evaluated at baseline (pre, 0mo), after 6 months (mid, 6mo), after 12 months (post, 12mo). The subjects carried on exercising, 30-60 minute a day, 2-3 times per week for 12 months. Statistical techniques for data analysis was paired samples t-test. The level of statistical significance was ≤.05. There was no significant difference of MMSE values in the control group, whereas mid and post MMSE values significantly increased in the exercise group. TC, TG and LDL-C values were significantly lower in the exercise group than in the control group. However, HDL-C values were higher in the exercise group compared to the control group. In conclusion, these results suggest that regular exercise have an effect on cognitive function, activities of daily living and exercise capacity in patient with senile dementia. In addition, regular exercise program may be helpful to reduce the incidence of heart disease and behavioral complications.
