Abstract
Adiponectin plays an important role in the modulation of glucose and lipid metabolism. The current study analyzed the effects of 12 weeks aerobic exercise in serum total adiponectin, HMW adiponectin, cardiorespiratory fitness, insulin resistance, obesity, and metabolic risk factors in 46 obese [body mass index (in kg/m2): ≥25; waist circumference >80 cm] middle aged women. The subject performed aerobic exercise program (3days/wk) involved walking at an intensity of 50-60% of VO2max for 12 weeks. Measured variables of the study include obesity and metabolic syndrome markers, including blood pressures, lipid profiles, fasting glucose and insulin, serum total adiponectin and HMW adiponectin. These variables measured at baseline and following the intervention program. After 12 weeks aerobic exercise program, obese indices, metabolic risk factors, blood pressures, lipid profiles, HOMA-IR and HMW adiponectin were significantly improved. Changes in HMW adiponectin were associated with changes in glucose(r=-.292, p<.05) and free fatty acid(r=-.489, p<.01). In stepwise multiple regression analysis, decreased free fatty acid(p<.001) and glucose(p=.040) were independent predictors of the changes in HMW adiponectin. In conclusion, the findings of the study show that regular aerobic exercise training significantly decrease glucose and free fatty acid and improve insulin resistance. And increase in HMW adiponectin expression was associated with both % body fat loss and improvement in metabolic indices.
