Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate perceived physical competence and body image (appearance satisfaction and orientation) in adolescents. First, the differences of perceived physical competence and body image were examined according to gender and exercise preference. In addition, the relationships between perceived physical competence and body image were analyzed. Total 838 students in middle school were participated in this study. As measure instruments, Lyu (2008)'s Hierarchical Physical Competence Scale (HPCS) and Cash(2000)'s the Multidimensional Body-Self Relation Questionnaire (MBSRQ) were used to measure students' perceptions. Cronbach's alpha, confirmatory factor analysis, MANOVA, corelation analysis, and regression analysis were used with SPSS ver 15.0 and Amos 5.0 programs. The conclusions were as follows: there were significant differences of perceived physical competence and body image in adolescents according to gender and exercise preference. Perceived physical competence was an predictor of body image. It suggested the need of future studies to investigate the relationship between perceived competence, body image, and other psychological variables with various participants.
