어린이박물관은 어린이들이 마음껏 상상하고 즐기며, 놀이와 체험을 통해 성장하는 ‘어린이를 위한 공간’이다. 어린이라면 누구든 당당히 어린이박물관을 출입할 수 있어야 한다. 그러나 현재 어린이박물관은 어린이 모두가 아니라 10세 이하의 저연령 아이들에게 초점이 맞춰져 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 전시 관람과 교육 참여 측면에서, 어린이박물관이 모든 연령대의 어린이들을 위해 존재하는지 확인해, 어린이박물관의 기본적인 포용성의 정도를 살폈다. 연구 결과 어린이박물관의 주요 이용객은 미취학 유아와 초등학교 저학년으로, 초등학교 고학년은 어린이박물관에서 소외돼 있음이 밝혀졌다. 어린이박물관의 전시 관람 상한 연령은 평균 9.0세로, 국외의 12.9세보다 3살가량 낮았다. 어린이박물관의 교육 역시 10세 이하 저연령 아이들을 주요 대상으로 하고 있었으나, 전시보다는 상대적으로 포용성의 정도가 높았다. 모든 어린이는 어린이박물관의 서비스를 이용할 권리가 있다. 어린이박물관에서 이루어지는 어린이의 창의력 발산과 무한한 잠재력 개발이 유아나 초등학교 저학년에만 해당할 리 없다. 더욱이 저출산 위기 속에서 지금처럼 특정 연령층 중심의 어린이박물관 운영 정책은 관람객 감소라는 한계에 부딪힐 위험 또한 있다. 어린이박물관이 ‘포용’의 가치를 높이려면 무엇보다도, 모든 어린이를 위한 공간으로써의 정체성을 갖고, 다양한 연령의 어린이를 아우르는 실천적 변화가 시급하다.
Abstract
Children’s museums are spaces for children where they can freely imagine, enjoy, and grow through play and hands-on experiences. Every child should be able to confidently visit a children’s museum. However, most children’s museums target children under the age of 10. This study examined whether children’s museums target children of all ages and how inclusive their exhibitions and educational programs are. The results revealed that the primary visitors to children’s museums are preschool and lower-grade elementary school students. The maximum average age of children’s museum visitors was 9, which was about 3 years lower than the average age of 12.9 in foreign countries. Although children’s museum education programs primarily targeted children under the age of 10, they were more inclusive than the exhibitions. Every child has the right to use the services of children’s museums. The creativity and potential for development that children’s museums can unlock should not be limited to preschool and lower elementary students. Moreover, given the low birth rate, children’s museums that target specific age groups of children might face a decrease in visitors. To increase children’s museums’ inclusivity, they should be spaces for children of all ages.
