다매체를 활용한 고전읽기와 비판적 사고교육 －토머스 모어의 『유토피아』를 중심으로－

Abstract

This study describes the content of analysis and the method of multimedia utilizing by reading Thomas More’s Utopia and presents a plan of methods for critical thinking education. The media used in the process of reading, understanding, analyzing, discussing, and writing about More’s work are quite various, rangingfrom films, internet videos, visual images, music and smart phones. Above all, the mediums mainly used for understanding and analyzing his work are the films Kundo: Age of the Rampant and Mission. Both works are based on the actual historical events of the mid 18th and 19th century, and are effective in clearly grasping the socio-political realities of the 16th century Europe in More’s Utopia. The first part of Moore’s Utopia reveals a critique of European politics in the early 16th century at the fore and describes the controversial issues of society through the debate of its characters. Therefore, by examining the controversial communication process of the characters, critical thinking education, that is, the analytic, comprehensive, argumentative, and alternative thinking education, can be carried out. Based on the various social systems and policies of ‘Utopia’ in the second part of the work, reflecting on the problems of our current society and discussing and writing about the solutions can also be a method to develop alternative thinking ability. Consequently, More’s Utopia can be considered as a work enabling the cultivation of critical thinking ability through the understanding and analysis of the text as well as various discussions and writing utilizing media.
