Abstract

This study is intended to present major theories and ethics of psychoanalysis as one of the various methodologies that can be tried for self-reflection in liberal education and to analyze by applying these to movies. Through this process, it is proved that the psychoanalysis is the approach for self-reflection in a broad sense that enables people to understand and empathize with not only ‘themselves’ but also ‘others’, and furthermore, they can improve critical recognition on the world where they live. The psychoanalysis that views the subject of desire as the nature of desire emphasizes that others’ desire is essential for the formation of the subject. Therefore, the psychoanalysis establishes the beginning to understand and empathize with the subject and others by connecting self-reflection education that focuses on ‘me’ with ‘others’ through the theory of ‘desire’. This self-reflection is clearly presented in the movie <The Piano Teacher> by Michael Haneke. The tradegy of the passive subject that relies on others ‘desire shown in the main character of the movie warns us about the risk of self-reflection absense. In addition, the movie asks such questions as ‘What is the one that I genuinely want? ‘and ‘Do I live the life that I genuinely want, or do I live by relying on others’ desire?’. However, the ethics of the psychoanalysis is not limited in the simple individual self-reflection but provides the opportunity to question and to criticize social fantasy that functions as ideology. It is possible to reach self-reflection in a broad sense that can improve critical views on the society by recognizing the socially structured fantasy or the fabrication of common ideas on ‘maternal instinct’, ‘woman’ ‘man’ and ‘pianist’, which are brought into question in the movie.
