Abstract
This study compares learner’s and instructor’s perception of writing feedback and suggests the direction of learner-oriented writing feedback. Writing feedback is a very important teaching-learning method in the college writing curriculum and one of the significant activities for writing learners. Writing feedback is provided by the instructor to the learner, but it is the learner who accepts the content. Therefore, evaluating the effectiveness and expectations of writing feedback should be a learner. This study was conducted with 221 learners and 4 instructors taking ‘Writing and Classical Reading 1’ and ‘Writing and Classical Reading 2’ at S University in Gyeonggi-do. The learners who applied for writing feedback at the Writing Clinic Center were asked to select an item to receive writing feedback through an online survey. The instructor provided the writing feedback to the learner and asked them to select a feedback item in the questionnaire. When comparing each questionnaire, only 12 of the 219 participants showed perfect agreement. Of these, 10 participants were interviewed. When instructors provide writing feedback, a perfect match learners can be considered the ideal learner. They were aware of problems with their writing, but lacked the ability to modify them. In addition, they had an attitude to confirm that they were aware of the problems with their writing. In order to provide learner-centered feedback, the instructor needs to identify the needs of individual learners and additional interviews with learners should be made after the feedback. It is up to the learner to accept the teacher’s writing feedback.
