Abstract

In March 2023, Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) in the United States went out of business 36 hours after signs of a bank run occurred. The main cause of the closure is said to be the neglect of management regarding the maturity gap duration between the deposits received and the assets managed by the bank. The banking industry inherently has the problem that a duration gap between assets and liabilities is inevitable. Usually, domestic banks in Korea and the top 15 banks in the United States pay careful attention to duration gap management (ALM). Recently, it has become challenging to predict the direction and volatility of price variables in the financial market. In this context, duration management in the banking industry is critical, and maintaining adequate liquidity is necessary to prevent bank runs. This paper builds a theoretical model for this, calculating the amount of liquid assets that need to be held and the appropriate long-term asset-holding ratio to prevent bank runs due to concerns about the bank's insolvency when valuation losses occur due to mark-to-market or asset amortization.
