이 연구는 아시아재단(Asia Foundation)의 아동극 관련 자료를 통해 1960년대 아동극을 재구성하고, 유치진이 1960년대 아동극계에 미친 영향에 대해 살펴본다. 해방 후 아동극계에서 가장 중요한 인물로 평가받고 있는 주평의 등장과 주평의 권위가 유치진 덕분에 가능할 수 있었다는 점을 고려하면, 1960년대 아동극을 새로운 관점에서 구성해볼 수 있을 것이다. 아시아재단이 지원한 유치진의 아동극 프로젝트(Children's Theater Project) 는 1960년대 아동극의 핵심이라 할 수 있는 전국아동극경연대회 개최와 한국아동극협회의 조직 및 활동의 토대가 되었다. 유치진의 아동극 기획이 갑작스러운 것은 아니다. 그는 지속적으로 학생극에 관심을 가졌으며, 아시아재단의 후원을 받아 중고등·대학연극경연대회도 개최하였다. 게다가 1958년에 창립된 국제극예술협회 한국본부(INTERNATIONAL THEATRE INSTITUTE KOREA CENTER) 의 초대위원장이 유치진이었고, I·T·I 아동극위원회의 주요 활동이 아동극 도서 발행과 공연 후원이었다는 점을 고려하면, 아동극계에서 유치진의 숨겨진 역할을 주목할 필요가 있다. 유치진의 드라마센터는 1962년 국민연극개발 3개년 계획을 발표하면서 아동극의 활성화를 위해 제2회·제3회 전국아동극경연대회와 아동극 지도자 양성을 위한 아동극강습회를 개최하였고 전문아동극단 ‘어린이극회’도 운영하였다. 드라마센터가 개최한 전국아동극경연대회와 아동극강습회는 1964년부터는 한국아동극협회가 주관하게 되었고, 유치진이 강조한 학교극을 통한 아동의 국어 능력 향상과 아동의 정서함양은 1960년대 아동극의 주요 목표였다. 유치진의 아동극 프로젝트는 아시아재단과 I·T·I한국본부 및 드라마센터의 후원 속에서 전국아동극경연대회와 아동극강습회 등과 같은 ‘제도’와 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있었으며, 이는 일제강점기 아동극에서는 볼 수 없었던 현상이다. 그런 의미에서 유치진의 아동극 프로젝트는 1960년대 아동극이 새로운 방향으로 나아가는 중요한 출발점이라 할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This study aims to reconstruct children's play in the 1960s through on children's play by the Asia Foundation, and to look at the impact of Yu Chijin on the children's play in 1960s. Considering the emergency of Joo Pyeong, considered the most important figure in the post liberation children's theater, that is the authority of Joo Pyeong in the 1960s could have been possible thanks to Yu Chijin, the 1960s children's play can be organized from a new perspective. The Children's Theater Project supported by the Asia Foundation was the basis for the organization and activities of the Korean Children's Drama Association in the 1960s, as well as the hosting of the National Children's Contest, which was the core of children's theater. Yu Chijin's plan is not sudden. He was constantly interested in student play and held middle and high school and university contest with the support the Asia Foundation. In addition, considering that the first korean head of the International Theatre Institute Korea Center founded in 1958 was Yu Chijin and I·T·I children's play committee's main activities were the publication of children's play books and the sponsorship of performances, his hidden role in the children's drama is drawing attention. The Drama Center held the second and third National Children's Play Contest and the Children's Play Training Center, promoting a three-year plan for the development of national drama in 1962. The Children's Drama Association of Korea started to organize the event from 1964, and the improvement of children's language skills and the emotional enhancement of children through school play emphasized by Yu Chijin were the main goals of children's theater in the 1960s. The children's play project of Yu Chijin is an important starting point for 1960s children's theater in a new direction.
