Abstract

This paper aims to explore the poetic theories of Kiwon Eo Yu-bong (1672–1744) and Dongpo Kim Si-min (1681–1747), who were disciples of Nongam Kim Chang-hyeop (1651–1708), an individual recognized for having influenced the trends in poetry and literature during the late Joseon Dynasty. By comparing their poetic theories with those of Kim Chang-hyeop, this study seeks to identify the patterns of inheritance and development within poetic theory. Eo Yu-bong and Kim Si-min, disciples of Nongam, regarded the Confucian classics and Zhu Xi's writings as the highest forms of literature, centered on Neo-Confucianism. Eo Yu-bong rejected elaborately ornate writings created to display erudition, instead favoring writing that naturally reflected the author's inner self, with the aim of creating literature imbued with the Dao(道). In poetry, he emphasized the essential nature of poetry based on its utility in cultivating human nature. Kim Si-min also considered the Confucian classics and Neo-Confucianism to be the pinnacle of literature. In terms of poetry, he emphasized content over form, advocating for simple and unpretentious poems rooted in a gentle and sincere spirit, and he valued poetry that truthfully depicted emotions and scenes based on personal experience. While their poetic theories share similarities, they also exhibit differences, which can be explained by the influence of Kim Chang-hyeop's poetic theory. Kim Chang-hyeop maintained a traditional view of literature as a means of embodying the Dao, while also recognizing the literary value of poetry to some extent. He focused on the expression of cultivated emotions and the truthful depiction of scenes in poetry, with an emphasis on the manifestation of the inner self. Thus, the characteristics of Eo Yu-bong and Kim Si-min's poetic theories are grounded in Kim Chang-hyeop's poetic theory. Therefore, the differences between Eo Yu-bong and Kim Si-min's poetic theories can be understood as the result of each scholar selectively developing and adapting Kim Chang-hyeop's literary influence according to their own inclinations and preferences, leading to a diverse evolution in poetic theory.
