연결 어미 ‘-게’의 의미적 확장과 통사적 제약

이 연구는 인지언어학적 관점에서 어미 ‘-게’의 의미적 확장을 설명하는 한편 선행 연구에서 다소 산발적으로 제시되어 온 ‘-게’의 다양한 의미 기능을 체계적으로 정리하여 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구에서는 먼저 기존 연구를 참고하여 ‘-게’의 메타 의미를 [목적]으로 설정하였다. [목적]은 이동 사건을 형성하는데, 이동 사건이 일어나는 배경에 따라 다시 [의도]와 [근거]로 구분될 수 있다고 보았다. [의도]는 물리적 공간에서 종점인 행위를 향하는 움직임인 데 반해, [근거]는 정신적 공간에서 종점인 판단/추측을 향하는 움직임으로 볼 수 있기 때문이다. 그런데 [의도]와 [근거]의 ‘-게’는 각각 특정한 조건하에서 관습적으로 굳어져 제3의 의미 및 기능([의지], [추측 질문])이 관찰되었는데, 특히 ‘-게’가 지닌 연결 어미로서의 통사적 특성을 상실하고 종결 어미화되어 종래의 [의도]와 [근거]의 ‘-게’와 동일 선상에서 논의하기 힘들었다. 본고에서는 이를 문법화된 용법으로 보고 문법화 과정에 영향을 미친 언어적 기제를 ‘환유’라는 인지언어학적 개념이 기대어 기술하고자 하였다.
Abstract
This study aims to explain the expansion of meanings of the ending ‘-ge’ from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. In addition, it systematically presents various semantic functions of ‘-ge’ suggested in previous studies. First, the meta-meaning of ‘-ge’ was set as [purpose] with reference to previous studies. Next, according to the conceptual framework in which the movement event toward the purpose occurs, it was again classified into [intention] and [ground], for if [purpose] is a movement toward the action, which is the target point in the physical space, [grounds for judgment] can be seen as a movement toward the judgment/guess that is the end point in the mental space. However, ‘-ge’ indicating [purpose] and [grounds for judgment] was used under specific conditions, and a third meaning and function [will] and [guessing question] were observed. In particular, it was difficult to see it as the same as the earlier ‘-ge’ because it had lost its syntactic characteristics as a connective ending and become a final ending. In this paper, this phenomenon is viewed as a grammaticalized usage. In addition, this study attempts to describe the linguistic mechanism that influenced this process based on metonymy, a cognitive linguistic concept.
