Abstract
This paper is an attempt to capture the dynamic aspect of subjectivation in the Kim Ho-yeon-jae's literature and to shed light on the performative contradictions and atopos aspects revealed therein. In the late Joseon Dynasty, performing the functional role of a ‘daughter-in-law-wife’ was the foundation for women to stand as human beings and moral subjects. The fact that she actually performed the functional role of a ‘daughter-in-law-wife’ and her specific perception of it shows that she was clearly aware of this fact. Her literature, based on the basic Confucian practice of female subjectivity, exposes ‘performative contradictions’: one is the claim to the Confucian ideal of human nature represented by the ‘Junzi(君子)’, and the other is the expression of interest in the public world. This can be said to be a manifestation of homo atopos, in which she, a being excluded from the category of universality called human, asserts universality and strives to live in a way that maintains a critical and transformative relationship with norms despite the possibility of her continued existence being at risk. The paradox that she can become a true subject only if she fails to achieve the Confucian feminine subjectivity according to the gender norms of the late Joseon Dynasty, despite being a woman, can be said to be her portrait as a gendered homo atopos of the late Joseon Dynasty.
